Dr. Tammy Root
Dr. Tammy Root is a Nationally Board-Certified Counselor with nearly 20 years of experience in the eating disorders field. With a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, a Master’s in Psychology, and a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies, Tammy brings a unique blend of clinical expertise and research insight to her work. She has worked with the Eating Disorders Program at the University of North Carolina and has contributed to numerous research studies focused on eating disorders and treatment development.
Tammy specializes in treating eating disorders, disordered eating, body image concerns, anxiety disorders, and individuals struggling with food noise or body image concerns while on GLP-1 medications or after bariatric surgery. She also works with families and couples navigating the challenges that arise when a loved one is struggling with an eating disorder, and supports clients managing emotional eating, chronic dieting patterns, and life transitions, such as changes related to school, relationships, career, and identity, as well as the everyday stressors of life.

Dedicated to bridging research and practice, Tammy tailors her therapeutic approach to each client’s unique needs. She utilizes a variety of evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – Enhanced for Eating Disorders (CBT-E), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Family Based Therapy (FBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), ensuring care is both effective and personalized.
